Blood pressure is something we often overlook due to there being no symptoms when it gets too high, so it’s important to get it checked if you think you may be at risk of hypertension. Book a blood pressure check at your local pharmacy today to get an accurate reading and tailored advice.
How does a blood pressure service work?
Please note that online booking is only available for Pharmacies in England
Your pharmacist will measure your blood pressure with a blood pressure monitor. Following this, they’ll be able to determine the best path forward based on your readings.
If your blood pressure is high, you may be offered a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor - which takes your blood pressure for 24 hours - to be fitted when it's most convenient for you.
When you return the ambulatory monitor in 24 hours, your pharmacist will clarify the results. If they’re still high, you may be referred to your GP.
What is high blood pressure?
Understanding your health is vital, especially when it comes to your blood pressure. Your heart works hard to pump blood throughout your body at a constant pressure. However, if there's too much strain on your organs and blood vessels, it could lead to serious health issues like heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
That's why it's essential to keep your blood pressure in check. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, usually has no warning signs, so regular check-ups are crucial to catching any potential issues before it's too late.
Don't worry, checking your blood pressure is straightforward and painless. By monitoring your blood pressure, you're taking the first step to maintaining a healthy heart and body. Remember, there are simple solutions and treatments for hypertension that can help keep you on track. Your pharmacist is there to support and guide you every step of the way.
Remember, it's always better to be proactive and catch any potential issues early on. So why not take the first step and schedule that blood pressure check today? You'll have peace of mind knowing that you're taking control of your health.

Frequently Asked Questions
High blood pressure has no symptoms until it develops into something more serious, so it’s important to get it checked if you think you are at risk. A blood pressure check at your pharmacy gives an accurate measurement of the pressure in your arteries, and your pharmacist will be able to offer advice.
High blood pressure often isn’t caused by anything in particular, and we don’t always know what causes it. However, you may be more at risk if you:
- Smoke
- Have a family history of high blood pressure
- Are overweight
- Are over 65
- Are of black African or black Caribbean descent
- Eat too much salt
- Drink too much alcohol or caffeine
Low blood pressure, or hypotension, isn’t usually as serious as high blood pressure and doesn’t often cause any issues. However, if you are experiencing symptoms such as dizziness or fainting, your pharmacists can provide you with useful lifestyle advice. Changes to your medication may be necessary with the support of your GP.
With Hey Pharmacist, you can find out which pharmacy near you offers a blood pressure check service. You can also get your blood pressure checked by your GP, but your pharmacy is more likely to be available and more accessible. Some workplaces also offer a blood pressure check.
You can check your blood pressure at home by purchasing a blood pressure monitor. However, if you want accurate results, you should visit your pharmacist who will be able to provide you with advice based on your readings.
If your blood pressure measurement is high when your pharmacist takes their first reading, they may fit you with an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, this is very similar to a regular blood pressure monitor, but instead, it takes your blood pressure automatically approximately every half an hour throughout the day to give a more accurate reading for your pharmacy to interpret when you return it the next day.
